The southern part of this trail is entirely hidden in the forests of the Spessart, a popular hill range in central Germany. To find a pub or inn you will have to descend into the valleys. The northern part of the Eselsweg traverses farmland and villages.
The name is derived from the word donkey. The way is probably very old, and has been used for centuries by donkey transports carrying salt.
